As I already pointed out some weeks ago my MiniMed 512 pump died on me. Unfortunately it was out of warranty so there is nothing that I could do about it. I was a little bummed but yet at the same time I was a little excited about getting a new pump. Last time around my insurance would not pay 100%, which I did not expect them to. So on this time around I was not looking forward to that 10% I would have to pay out.

In the past my insurance company was a little biased towards MiniMed. I'm not sure why but they insisted that MiniMed was the better pump. I called the insurance up and found out that United healthcare is now the parent company of my insurance and that there were other pump options. I was excited to hear about that. So the other pump options were Animas or Cosmo. At this point I had done my research on all 3 pumps, MiniMed, Cosmo, and Animas. And my favorite out of the three was Animas.

Before my Animas pump arrived I did want to try the new MiniMed sensor with the new MiniMed pump. I did not like the idea wearing two things instead of one or my body, but the technology was pretty cool and gave some sense of security in knowing that the sensor will pick up my low blood sugars while I'm sleeping. But within the first 24 hours of testing the MiniMed sensor, I found all kinds of problems. Like, low and high blood sugars without glucose meter but the sensor did not pick them up. I will create another post another time about the problems, but for now, I decided to switch to Animas.

After waiting a couple weeks for my paperwork to be processed my Animas 2020 pump finally arrived. I was quite surprised when the insurance called me and said that the pump will be paid for, 100%. Just a few days before that, and it's called me and offered a $300 credit if I would send my back my MiniMed pump. I found that quite funny that a competitor company would pay me for my old pump.

My animus pump finally came, it was sleek, black and lighter than the MiniMed pump. I was so delighted to try it on. Animas is a Johnson & Johnson company and apparently they're very strict with safety. So technically, I was not supposed to where the pump until I went through pump training. But I believe the pump came in on a Friday and the training was several weeks away, I had plenty of insulin in the fridge and a handful of pump accessories and supplies. There was no way I was going to wait!

The first time around inserting the Animas quickset (I believe they call it quick inset) did not go well. But after giving it another go all was well. There are some things I do not like about the pump, basically comparing the Animas pump side-by-side with MiniMed, the Animas pump requires a lot more button pushing to get simple tasks done. For a person who really enjoys efficiency this is a major quirk for me. But in due time I will grow accustomed to all the extra button pushing.

Here are some things I really enjoy about Animas 2020 pump:

  • it has a three-minute basal a delivery system
  • color screen (this was not a feature I expected to like)
  • adjust the screen brightness
  • some of the calorie King data already preloaded
  • the battery life is a whole lot longer than the MiniMed pump battery
  • it is a little bit lighter than the MiniMed pump
  • a few extra safety features that are really handy although a little annoying
  • all kinds of extra alarm settings
  • the screen is a tad bit larger than the MiniMed pump

I suppose I could go on and on about the little things I enjoy as the things I don't. But the bottom line is that I have a pump now and I am not giving five to eight daily injections along with my Lantus injection. And that makes me happy!

If you are like the checkout the Animas 2020 pump, Animas has a virtual pump demo that you can check out. I do think the demo has a few problems but at least he gives you a really good idea on what the pump looks like and the button pushing features. If you're considering the Animas 2020 pump I would recommend it to you. If you have any questions please for free to leave a comment, I would be more than glad to assist anyone with decision-making for the Animas pump.

Animus 2020

Elvis-

I'm home right now waiting for my Animus 2020 to arrive.  I'ven been diabetic for 19 years and this is my first go at a pump. I'm pretty nervous about it due to my unpredictable blood glucose levels, but youre statement made me feel a lot more comfortable!  I had to use the MiniMed for 4 days for contiuous blood monitoring, and I had the same problems as you.  I did a 3am check with my one-touch and was 40-but the monitor didn't alarm.  The day before it set off numerous alarms but my diabetes educator told me to keep it connected.  In summary, thank you so much for posting your experience-I'm feling better already!

PS Aetna only covered 80% for me-bummer :-(

Minimed 522 vs Animas 2020

Wondering if you can give me some suggestions.  I have had diabetes for 20 years and need to go onto the pump for prepregnancy.  I have been suggested to either get the minimed 522 or animas 2020.  I like the smaller, seeminly more durable Animas over the minimed, but I like that the minimed takes fewer buttons pressed to get the bolus and has a lock-out feature.  Since, I haven't had any experience (other than the 1hr. meeting with the reps) can you please give me some of your infor, based on your experience.

Can you lock-out the buttons on the Animas 2020, to prevent accidental dosing?

thanks

cathy

Animas

I wore my Animas through my pregnancy and was so glad I had it. I don't have the 2020 though. I have the 1250 which is real close to the 2020. I highly recommend the 2020 because it has things like your IOB wich is factored in your boluses. To my knowledge the Minimed 522 doesn't have this feature, nor does it have the food database. The increments are smaller in the 2020 also which could be a help while being pregnant IMO. Insulin sensivity is more probable in the 1st trimester and this would be a consideration. Regaurdless, either pump would be suitable. Chances are you've already made your decision anyway Cathy, but I just thought I'd give my opinion.
